Time is running out
We as individuals are all responsible for the current climate situation as we all, in some way, have benefited from the industrial revolution. Over the past 20 years the world's climate has changed significantly and we have asked Politicians to solve it. But after 50 years of trying with many conferences, the biggest question now and which has always been so is 'Who pays the bill?' Their main priority has been and always will be, to their own nation first, which is expected and understood. Which begs the question are they actually the right people to lead the charge against climate change. It was clear when President Trump removed the USA from the agreement in 2017, with the impact on the jobs situation as his main reason for doing so, that I felt we need to look at this from a different perspective. So we require a fresh stance, that relieves the burden from the political arena and any one nation.

Project Big Blue has been set up to tackle the climate issue from a bold and new stance, where the decision makers are scientists and environmentalists and the onus on the worlds population as a collective. We have an Idea, a Plan of Action and a way of raising the funds necessary to 'Pay The Bill'. We only have about 10 years to get this right.

The Paris Agreement 2015
The Commitment
After numerous conferences and summits spanning the past 50 years the latest attempt to solve climate change, The Paris Agreement was signed by 195 Nations. It's main goal was to reduce the amount of fossil fuels being used and become Carbon Net Zero By 2050. Net Zero is when you remove the Carbon at source before it gets into the atmosphere. Secondly, to limit the temperature rise to less than 2 degrees increase. Also it promised that by 2020 the richer nations would donate $100 billion to the lesser nations to help them achieve this commitment. Nations went away and have implemented their own policies to achieve these goals, all with different date times.

So in the past 6 years plans were being drawn up, governments were changing laws and money was being spent. Many Scientists have said that the Paris Agreement did not go far enough with it's plans and it will not be enough to radically change the climate.

This website agrees with science, as between now and 2050 hundreds of billions of tonnes more Carbon will be added into the atmosphere with the prediction that we are looking to a 3 degree increase in temperature.

We have to take the fight much further otherwise the consequences will be much worse. The Paris Agreement is an economic plan that wants to protect the worlds economy, with actual expenditure concentrated on business.

Climate Change?
What is it?
We all believe we understand climate change, but it is confusing. In simple terms, carbon is the main element for retaining the heat from the sun, it is the level of carbon in the atmosphere that sets the planets temperature. The level of carbon is measured as Parts Per Million (PPM), so whatever unit that is used its the amount of the substance in a million, i.e. carbon, oxygen etc...So in tonnes, its is the amount of tonnes of carbon in a million tonnes of air. The PPM is the thermostat.

I was shocked, as I thought the figure would be in the tens of thousands at least, but 417 in a million. In 150 years we have managed to add just under half of the amount of carbon to the amount that was there in the beginning.

We are now emitting 43 billion tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere every year, increasing the PPM level by 1-3, so at this rate by 2050 it could be in excess of 500PPM. The extra environmental damage that this will cause is unknown, but the prospects are not very good and we need to adjust the thermostat.

Reducing the carbon level
How can we reduce our own carbon footprint?, plant trees, switch off lights, recycling to name just a few. The answer is it helps but it will not be enough, we will always have some carbon footprint.

We have been researching methods of absorbing the carbon and have the technology to reduce the levels by taking carbon directly from the atmosphere or from the emissions we emit at source. It is this that the worlds efforts are concentrating on, by getting industry to build Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) facilities. This is a good start but it does not remove the Carbon that is already in the atmosphere, hence bringing down the PPM. The flaw is that it will stop carbon going into the atmosphere but not until the whole world is compliant, so the carbon levels will continue to rise.

To bring the PPM down to a level that will be ideal, we need to take the Carbon out of the atmosphere directly, to the tune of 43 billion tonnes a year. This is called Direct Carbon Capture (DAC), but at this time there is no actual return on the investment, so businesses are not willing to commit and governments do not have the resources, The reality is however, that there are several companies that are looking at the carbon market as the next business opportunity, as eventually we will have to pay for the carbon we emit, and it will come as a tax or an incremental cost added onto goods we purchase. These new businesses will not come in enough time to make a difference

We cannot stop unprecedented events, such as volcanoes, earthquakes etc...but we can stop ice caps melting and sea levels rising, assist biodiversity, save species and clean up our rubbish. All through Carbon Capture facilities.
